Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to learn how to do effective Web Searches using Internet Search Engines. The Assignment also provides real-word usage of the topics from Chapter 1-2

1.  Save your work

2.  Name the Word document with your_name_W1TechA

1)  Example: (Jane_Doe_W1TechA.docx)

3.  Check you have completed all the tasks (Highlighting the tasks completed helps)

4.  Download the Edited Word assignment from office 365

5.  Open and Check the File for accuracy

6.  Save and Upload the Word file to the Assignment Dropbox

Technology used in this tutorial:

·       Web Search Engine

 

A web search engine is software that finds websites, webpages, images, videos, news, maps, and other information related to a specific topic. The uses of the Engine enters search text (a word or phrase). This search text is broken down into keywords for the search algorithm of the search engine. Based on the results of the keywords and the relationships to the other keywords in the search text, the search engine returns the hyperlinks related to the original search.

Guide for Effective Web Search:

1.  Be Specific as Possible

1.  Example: Tabby Cat is more specific than Cat

2.  Use Quotes to Locate A Specific Phrase

1.  Example: “Go Peacocks” is different than Go Peacocks

3.  Search Within the site to limit the result to that website. Precede the address with site:

1.  Example to search only at www.uiu.edu:

2.  site:www.uiu.edu “Information Technology”

4.  Omit words with the minus sign operators

1.  Example to find smartphones not from Samsung:

2.  smartphones -Samsung

5.  Search for files of a specific type using the filetype: operator

1.  Example to find PDFs:

2.  filetype:pdf Computers

6.  Search for wildcards or unknown words with *

1.  Example: “Greatest * in the world”

7.  Search for related sites using related:

1.  Example: related:cnn.com

 

Web Search Assignment:

1.  Open a Web Browser (Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari etc…)

2.  Go to the Search Engine – www.google.com

3.  Use each of the operators below to search for each of the following in both search engines.

4.  Remove the operator and search again to see the effect

5.  Input below, on this document, the effect of the operator and the number of the results that you find, with the search engine. (Search Term: Dog was completed for example).
